Spring is definitely in the air! Without a doubt, you’re getting antsy to take out your motorcycle. But to ride safely all summer long, a few things need to be checked before your first ride.
9 steps to start the season off right
Battery
This is the first thing you need to check before you hit the road. If your battery is partially or completely discharged, you’ll need to recharge it using an adapter that is suited for your motorcycle.
Tires
Your tires could be deflated after remaining still for several months. Check the pressure and wear condition of your tires at the start of each season. Refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for the recommended pressure.
Chain
The tension on the chain should not be too rigid or too loose. The ideal clearance is specified in your motorcycle’s user manual. Then, you should clean and lubricate the chain to get it ready for your next road trips.
Oil
A complete oil change (including an oil filter replacement) is always recommended after your motorcycle has been in storage for several months, in order to prevent oxidation inside the engine.
Gas
Just like the oil, the gas that remains inside your tank should be emptied before you start riding your motorcycle again.
Cables
If your motorcycle is equipped with clutch and throttle cables, it’s important to inspect them. You may need to clean and lubricate them.
Lights
Your motorcycle is equipped with several lightbulbs. Make sure each of them works (headlights, turn lights, brake lights and dashboard lighting), and replace them if needed. You should also clean your headlights.
Liquids
To avoid getting into trouble on the road, don’t forget to check the different liquid levels and adjust them if needed.
Run-in
At the beginning of each season, you should ideally go on a short ride over a few kilometres before you go on longer trips. In addition to testing your brakes, this first run allows you to make sure everything is in order.
Your motorcycle is now ready to start the new season. It’s up to you to make the most of it!
